Although Oahu is the third largest island of the eight major Hawaiian Islands, Oahu is home to over 90% of Hawaii’s population, with a total of about 900,000 residents. Oahu could be considered the most prominent of the Hawaiian Islands, being home to both Waikiki and Honolulu, which is the largest city and state capital. Although Oahu may suffer the most from overcrowding and traffic, Oahu is the most developed of the islands and has the most to offer in terms of shopping, dining, and entertainment.

Many of the people who come to Oahu come in search of Hawaii’s world famous beaches. Characterized by pristine, crystal-clear waters and soft, white sand, some of the most popular beaches in Oahu include Hanauma Bay, Waikiki Beach, Kailua Beach, Lanikai Beach, Ala Moana Beach, Sunset Beach, Waimea Bay, and Sandy Beach. Some other popular sites of interest include Diamond Head, the North Shore, USS Arizona Memorial, USS Missouri, the Polynesian Cultural Center, Ala Moana Shopping Center, the Bernice P. Bishop Museum, and the Honolulu Academy of Arts.
